OUR FOUNDER, DR. NNEKA GIGI (PHD)

Dr. Nneka Uzoma Gigi, affectionately known as Mama Kano or The Braid Doctor, is a trailblazer at the intersection of education, advocacy, and creative expression. As a Nigerian-American homeschooling mom, braid adornment artist, natural hair griot, literacy advocate, and birthing justice advocate, she embodies a profound commitment to empowering underserved communities.

With over 15 years of dedicated experience in decolonizing educational, mental health, and birthing experiences, Dr. Gigi holds a PhD in Educational Management from Hampton University, specializing in K-12 education. Her academic journey includes a Master of Arts in Arts Management and a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Communication and Social Sciences, along with Interdisciplinary studies focused on Early Childhood Education.

Dr. Gigi's personal statement reflects her multifaceted approach to advocacy and empowerment. Drawing from her rich background in fashion design, jewelry making, body painting, graphic arts, event planning, and fundraising, she has spent over 11 years crafting compelling narratives and initiatives that champion the rights and voices of marginalized communities.

Over the span of 17 years, Dr. Gigi has spearheaded transformative programs and curated innovative curricula to dismantle systemic barriers in education, maternal health, and technology access. Whether orchestrating virtual events, orchestrating inclusive magazine covers, or pioneering literacy initiatives in underserved areas, her mission remains constant: to foster inclusivity, empathy, and innovation.
